Why is waterproofing important in tunnels?
There are many reasons why it is important to consider waterproofing and drainage in a tunnel construction project.
- In winter, filtered water causes icing on the road, which is very dangerous for car traffic.
- For protection from hidden icing in tunnel openings and short tunnels.
- To protect the structure in the tunnels from concrete leakage or from the destruction of the wall by water leakage.
- For protection of concrete against penetration of aggressive waters (sulphates).
- Another important reason is that it reduces maintenance costs.
